The words for Countries in Croatian have a gender. I am sure that while some exceptions exist, in the main, if a country ends in an a, it is feminine. Otherwise, it is masculine.
This matters, because the preposition iz 'from' is followed by the genitive case. The case changes depending on the gender.
The Croatian word for England is Engleska, and this changes to Engleske in the sentence Ja sam iz Engleske 'I am from England'.
